Miranda Victoria Velasquez -- on probation for the January gun incident -- took off from the Route 22 Phillipsburg Walmart in a white SUV just as Pohatcong police were arriving to investigate a theft report around 2:30 p.m. Tuesday, Pohatcong Police Chief Scott Robb said.
Officers began following the SUV -- which at one point was heading directly at a police cruiser on a dead-end road -- but the police car swerved and sent debris flying at Velasquez's car, Robb said.
Velasquez sped along Route 22 through Lopatcong and Phillipsburg, where police called off the pursuit, the chief said.
She continued across the toll bridge into Easton, P.A., where she lost control of the car, hitting the bumper of another car, Easton police said.
Then, Velasquez crashed into the center median before working her way over to the right side of the highway past the Bushkill Drive overpass and coming to a stop facing the highway on a downward slope, authorities said.
She ran to the Lafayette College nearby where a college police lieutenant saw her walking behind a Sullivan Road sorority house, police said.
He took her into custody and turned her over to Easton police.
Velasquez was being held in Northampton County Prison without bail awaiting extradition hearing, which could return her to Warren County, authorities said.
